The Star Trek Litverse Chronological Reading List

In the waning days of the 20th century, and across the first two decades of the 21st century, the paperback publisher Pocket Books created an enormous, sprawling, self-contained, internally-consistent continuation of the Star Trek multiverse, picking up from the end of the television show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and involving dozens of authors and hundreds of books. The aim was to continue the story lines of the three great Star Trek shows set in the 24th century. Altogether, this Star Trek Litverse chronicles the roughly 15 years after the final Deep Space Nine episode and includes not just characters and situations from The Next Generation and Voyager, but other realms of the franchise, including some that only appear in novel form. The stories are all connected together, sometimes tangentially and sometimes directly, borrowing characters from the minor and major realms of Trek and elevating them, and sharing continuity across story lines.

To understand why this is special, you have to understand what came before this effort and what is currently happening after it. Prior to the Litverse, books bearing the Star Trek name, many of which are great, sought only to be congruent with the various Star Trek television shows, as if each book in question could just be another episode on TV. The books did not continue, and often contradicted each other.

And after the Litverse, the books being released had nothing to do with this gigantic continuity, but instead were specifically tie-in stories to the newer Star Trek shows, such as Discovery and Picard.

In this, the Litverse stands apart, not just in its special efforts for Trek but for literature in general — how often do multiple authors spend decades building a giant, continuing, shared story like this? And it is very well done, being totally satisfying if you are a Trek fan.

Below is a reading list, set with an in-universe chronology, which aims to chronicle the main trunk of reading for the Star Trek Litverse. This list is for those of us who wish to take this special journey from start to finish, completing as much of that journey as possible. It is, as of right now, marginally incomplete. As I read through, I am making adjustments to make this list more complete, more inclusive, more accurate.

If you couple this list with the Almighty Star Trek Litverse Reading order Flow Chart (version 5, circa 2020), an amazing resource put together by Thrawn and 8of5 (found behind the link, at thetrekcollective.com), and if you keep Memory Beta at the ready, then this list will be of value to you as you travel the Litverse road. And you should travel it, because it is a lot of fun. If you are especially a Trek fan who misses the great spurt of 24th century shows in the 1990s, who loved the big universe those shows created and who loved the way those stories were crafted, then the Star Trek Litverse is going to scratch an itch you maybe didn’t realize you had. It is beautiful to behold.

So, without further ado, the list is below. It will be updated periodically, here, in this space, as I read through the various titles. However, if there is something you’d like to correct, a suggestion you’d like to make, then leave a comment or send me a message and I will do my best to factor in your ideas. I want this to be a resource for anyone.

Everything below is a book, unless specifically acknowledged as a graphic novel, or a film or television episode.

Open questions: Does the Vulcan Souls Trilogy get included? What about Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Revenant?

Is it possible the brief Wildstorm Star Trek comics are all considered in this continuity? The four issue mini-series, Divided We Fall” is in there, with several crossover characters from the DS9 Relaunch section of the Litverse. More info here: https://bit.ly/2XS9zJe
